While in Santa Rosalia we decided to do a road trip, a three hour bus ride, across to Guerrero Negro on the Pacific side of the Baja Peninsula. This is the starting point for the whale watching tours that take you to the Laguna Ojo de Liebre.
From January to March the lagoon is home to the largest collection of grey whales on the planet. As many as 1000 whales can be in the area. This is where they mate and give birth prior to their return migration to Alaska.
This is a World Heritage site, as such, the number of tourists on site at any give time is limited and everyone must be accompanied by a registered guide.
Now having sailed from Alaska down the west coast to Mexico we have seen numerous whales but this was amazing! The whales are curious and so accustomed to the pangas (the boats we are in) that they will approach close and sometimes even close enough to allow visitors to touch and rub them.
